The Mobile Data Association has issued a release saying that 40.7 million users in the UK used the mobile internet in the third quarter of 2006, this being ?the number of unique customers who are accessing the internet on a mobile device via any portal at least once in the reporting month?. This appears to be an additive number for the three months in the quarter, ie there were 13 million users in July and 14 million in September...and of course most of these are probably the same people.
?According to research from Nielsen/NetRatings, a WAP-enabled mobile phone is the second most popular digital device owned by Britons, after the PC, with 57% of the survey owning a phone that could access the internet.? There?s just over 60 million people in the UK (CIA factbook), which puts the number of WAP-enabled mobile phones at 34.5 million in the UK. Comparing this with the MDA figures it means 40.5% of people with a WAP-enabled phone in the UK use the feature at least once a month. That?s not bad.
