TCS Issued Device-To-Device Software Transfer Patent

ANNAPOLIS, MD -- March 13, 2007 -- TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a leading provider of mission-critical wireless communications, today announced the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued patent number 7,191,233, titled, "System for Automated, Mid-Session, User-Directed, Device-To-Device Session Transfer System."

The patent enables a user to transfer an ongoing software session from one device to another device. A user may be in the middle of a software session on one device such as a computer or mobile phone, when he or she desires to transfer an ongoing session to another device, either wireless or landline.

This invention provides for a convergence between wireless and wireline applications, as well as between different wireless applications such as from a laptop computer with a modem to a mobile phone. Thus, a user never needs to worry about losing data that began with one device when desiring to transfer to another device. For example, a user may be in the middle of an e-mail session, instant messaging session or Web-based transaction and could transfer the session from a desktop computer to a mobile phone without any data loss.

"TCS continues to be at the forefront of the convergence of wireless and wireline networks," stated Drew Morin, Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer for TCS. "As carriers roll out their triple play and quadruple play services, there will be an ever increasing need for applications to be able to be seamlessly ported between preferred device types for these services."

This represents TCS' 53rd announced patent with more than 150 additional patent applications pending in the United States and jurisdictions throughout the world.

The "System for Automated, Mid-Session, User-Directed, Device-To-Device Session Transfer System" provides for a method and system for a user to re-direct an ongoing software-based session from one device to a second device, and thereby discontinuing the software session on the first device and resuming the software session on the second device. The invention also provides for the session data of the first device to be reformatted to the device profile of the second device, and also redirects any messages for the first device to the second device.
