ROSEMONT, Ill.-- Abanco International, LLC, a leading provider of payment processing solutions, today announced New Mexico Rail Runner Express has selected its comprehensive retail solution Mobile Data Technology (MDT) In-Transit application to bring credit, debit and cash payment options into one application on the station platform. In addition, Rail Runner will use the innovative and proven MDT In-Transit products to validate tickets, vend passes, and sell pre-order tickets via the Internet. Rail Runner's utilization of the Abanco MDT application will allow it not only to speed payment transaction, but also to improve passenger service and satisfaction, manage price and product availability, forecast demand for market segments, and eliminate the cost and complexity of personnel tasks.
MDT In-Transit operates on a rugged, wireless terminal. It is a fully-functional, web-enabled, touch screen unit with built-in software and custom integration components that utilize barcode scanning and magnetic strip technologies to simplify the business process and to deliver secure transactions in the field.
"Abanco MDT In-Transit is a simple-to-use, yet comprehensive application that can help any railway reduce operation costs and increase revenues," said Tracy Metzger, President, Abanco International, LLC. "MDT In-Transit is the 'total' railway solution in that it validates tickets quickly, reconciles inventory daily, creates passenger manifests, and conducts onboard retailing."
"In addition to the fact that this ticketing system allows us to continue to offer commuters a very fast and efficient means of transportation, it also is a very personal system", says Lawrence Rael, Executive Director of the Mid-Region Council of Governments. "You don't talk to a machine, you talk to a person. Customers actually have face-to-face interaction, which I think elevates the quality of the ticket-purchasing experience".
About New Mexico Rail Runner Express
In mid-July of this year, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express began carrying passengers between the City of Albuquerque and the Town of Bernalillo, 17-miles to the north. The new passenger rail provider has become the fastest start-up of a commuter rail train in the country in the past 20 years. In the next couple of months, service south to the Village of Los Lunas and the City of Belen will be added as part of Phase I of the Rail Runner project, which calls for an initial total of nine stations in the 50 mile corridor. Phase II, which will include service from the Phase I metro area north to Santa Fe, is set for completion in late 2008. Less than one month after service began, the Rail Runner celebrated its 100,000th rider. Today, more and more commuters who work in the heart of New Mexico's Rio Grande Valley are discovering the many benefits of commuting to work by train. Currently, some 2,000 riders are "Catching the Bird" daily and full Rail Runner service has not even yet been implemented throughout the corridor.
