mobile development

hi. im new to this kind of things as i usually develop web-based system. this time i need to develop a mobile application, the simple one for my final year project. the problem is i really don't know how to start and where to begin. could you pls introduce me with any open source software which i can use to develop the application? i found on internet that J2ME is used to develop the mobile software..so how it being used? and is it possible to install the application on mobile phone? which mobile phone is more compatible to install?

i do want to learn. Pls help.
