Mobile game engines

I am developing a j2me game engine for 2D games as my master thesis project.
I would like to compare our engine with others and thus I'm wondering if anyone knows
of any game engines used in development of mobile games. They can be used on other platforms
than j2me and be both commercial or open source as long as there are some documentation that
can be used to compare features etc.

As far as 2d games for mobile phone, we have not come across any game engines which are widely used or promising. More over, since most people dont even use the in-built game engine for their games, there is no good use of going for a game engine for 2D in J2me. And this forum is only into J2ME and not anyother platform.

So what are the primary reasons for this?

The primary reasons are
1) The in-built game engine has device oriented bugs.
2) Not well optimized as a good game programmer can do.
3) Memory usage and CPU usage are not decent when using it.
4) There are not much functionalities other than basic stuff.
